CURRICULUM STRUCTURE: Master’s degree
LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY STUDIES
(24 credits from courses + 6 credits from thesis = total 30 credit hours)
MANDATORY COURSES (12 credits)
- Linguistic Theory and Language Description (4 credits)
- Genre and Cinema Studies (4 credits)
- Academic Writing for Linguistic Studies (4 credits) or Academic Writing for Literary Studies (4 credits)
ELECTIVE COURSES (12 credits)
Any graduate course recommended by the student’s advisor.
Thesis (6 credits)
Monograph in English, from 20 to 30 thousand words long, publicly defended, which demonstrates research capacity and aptitude for methodologically presenting the results obtained.

LANGUAGE STUDIES
(48 credits from courses + 12 credits from dissertation = total 60 credit hours)
1st Phase (32 credits)
Any elective courses, at the discretion of the student’s advisor.
Note: Graduate courses taken during the master’s program or at other graduate programs can be transferred up to a maximum of 24 credits, excluding the dissertation, at the discretion of the Admission Committee.
PRE-QUALIFYING EXAM
After completing the 1st Phase with grade point average equal or superior to B (3,0), students must undergo a written test to assess their knowledge of the line of research to which their thesis proposal belongs. The qualifying exam may be taken with access to reference material and must be submitted to the Coordination of the Program within 48 hours from its scheduled starting date and time.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY EXAM
In addition to the English Language Proficiency assessed in the Admission Exam, by the conclusion of the 1st Phase, students should prove proficiency in a second foreign language through an exam conducted by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at UFSC. Native English speakers should demonstrate proficiency in Portuguese, as well as in a second foreign language. For native speakers of languages other than English or Portuguese, Portuguese shall count as the second foreign language.
2nd Phase (16 credits)
Readings in Linguistic Studies (4 credits)
Research Paper in Linguistic Studies (4 credits)
8 more credits from courses selected at the discretion of the advisor, of which up to 4 credits may be granted to Extracurricular Academic Activities.
Optionally, the following courses can be taken and recorded in the Transcript, but on the condition that their credit hours do not amount to the full 60 credits required for completing the doctoral program. The courses are:

Non-mandatory Internship
OPEN SEMINAR
Upon finishing the 2nd Phase’s Readings course, students must present an Open Seminar regarding the topic studied.
QUALIFYING
At the end of the 2nd Phase, the student must jointly and integratedly present and defend their Research Paper and Final Dissertation Project.
Dissertation (12 credits)
Original work in English, from 45 to 70 thousand words long, publicly defended, fruit of research activity that offers real contribution to the knowledge area where it belongs.
