INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS: The individual research projects of the faculty member of the Graduate Program in English can be accessed through the curriculums available in the Lattes Platform on the CNPq website.

RESEARCH GROUPS: The research groups of PPGI’s faculty members are available in the CNPq Directory of Research Groups.

Language and Cognitive Processes Laboratory

The Language and Cognitive Processes Laboratory aims at investigating phenomenos of language processing and acquisition, typical and atypical, in relation to cogitive systems and mechanisms such as memory and attention, in native and non-native speakers, of different ages. LabLing’s research topics: memory systems (working, declarative and procedural), attention control, explicit and implicit language, development of linguistic abilities, lexical processing and syntatic processing. The Laboratory’s research project are funded by several agencies (CNPq, CAPES, FAPESC, British Academy). The studies are carried out with online behavioral techniques, eye tracking (SMI RED 250), and EEG/ERP (64 channel BrainVision ActiCHamp). Amongst its members there are undergraduate students, MA and PhD candidates, post-doctoral researchers and faculty members.

AQUILES – Acquisition of English as a Second Language

AQUILES is a research group made up of faculty members and students from different Brazilian regions and universities. The group is based in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina and led by Raquel D’Ely, professor at the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures (DLLE) and Graduate Program in English (PPGI), both at the  Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. The group carries out theoretical-practical studies under a cognitive and/or social approach in the field of acquisition/development of a foreign language and seeks to investigate the relation between theory and teacher practice, understanding the classroom as a place for research.

NuGaL – Research Center for Gender Studies Through Language

NuGaL is a research and study center situated in the field of Critical Feminist Discourse Analysis (Wodak, 1997; Figueired et al, 2006; Caldas-Coulthard, 2020), interested in the mutual and constituent relation between discourse and gender. To that effect, the center’s works use Systemic Functional Linguistics as its theoretical foundation (Halliday and Matthiessen, 2004), and anticapitalist feminist, antiracist and echological approaches as its central gender theories (Fraser, 2013; Federici, 2009). More specifically, the group’s works study the relations between gender, race, class, sexuality and power in the march of financial capitalism of the third millennium, in particular in regard to the role of language or semiosis, in the construction and reconstruction of belief systems and knowledge of social relations and identities. Between the topics/objects explored by the group, we can point out: representations, disputes and tensions regarding productive and sexual rights in the legal system, relations between discourse, gender and health; representations of gender roles in sexual and/or romantic relationships in popular music, narratives related to matters of body and aesthetics politics for black women; oral narratives of life stories with a focus on gender and race representativity; representations of women in political discourse.

NEL – Center for Reading Studies

Founded in 2002 at the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures – UFSC, the group’s main objective is to carry out research in the field of processing, comprehension and production of written language, including both cognitive and instructional aspects.  Regarding cognitive aspects, the focus is on the understanding of the processes involved in writing comprehension and production, how they intersect and influence each other in the construction of the text’s mental representation during reading and the production of written texts. Regarding the instructional aspects, the group’s researches seek to analyze and develop teaching practices that aid the reader in the optimization of textual processing, freeing working memory resources for running higher level processes and leading the reader to a more critical and productive reading of the text.

NUPFFALE – Center for Phonetic and Phonology Applied to Foreign Language

The Center for Phonetic and Phonology Applied to Foreign Language is made up of Graduate and Scientific and Technological Initiation faculty members and students from different institutions , involvved in research projects regarding phonetics and phonology applied to foreign language, producing research on speaking perception and production, as well as the teaching and learning of pronunciation.

NEI – Center for Irish Studies

A multidisciplinary research group on Irish Studies, aiming at promoting studies and research on the social, political, economic, cultural and artistic aspects of Ireland in multiple fields and contexts, such as History, Literature, Theater, Visual Arts, Cinema, Journalism, Social Sciences, amongst others.

NEG – Center for Grammar Studies

The Center for Grammar Studies – N.E.G. – was founded in 1998 by professors Carlos Mioto, Maria Cristina Figueiredo Silva, Ruth Elizabeth Vasconcelos Lopes and Roberta Pires de Oliveira, as an open space, albeit based at UFSC, to bring together researchers interested in using formal theories to study natural languages in their various aspects. We thus sought to strengthen formal approaches nationally, which are still so little known in Brazil. Works developed in the center, such as syntax and semantics textbooks, are recognized and used by institutions around Brazil. Additionally, NEG hosts visiting researchers from Brazil and abroad. It is also takes part in international cooperation projects.

NUPDiscurso – Text, Discourse and Social Practices

NUPDiscurso was created by Professor José Luiz Meurer and obtained accreditation at UFSC in 2001, by the Council of the School of Communication and Arts during the 07/03/2001 meeting, through the Ordinance n. 0649/GR/96. It is made up of faculty members, undergraduate and graduate students interested in research in the field of discourse analysis and related fields. NUPDiscurso has contributed to the creation of new research groups by its members and took part in all of SEPEX/UFSC editions up until 2012. In addition to participating in national and international congresses and academic-professional associations, its members have published papers and book chapters considering the relation between texts, discourses and social practices. NUPDiscurso carries out research with the aim of describing, interpreting and/or explaining lexicogrammatical, discursive and social aspects of language use in different sociocultural contexts. Research carried out by NUPDiscurso aims at providing subsidies to teachers and studies regarding varied manifestations of oral and written texts, contributing to the development of a better comprehension of the roles and power of language.
