A systemic-functional study of strategies of persuasion in public discourse: The 2018 Brazilian Presidential Election
This presentation is based on an exploratory investigation on public discourse as instantiated in Presidential electoral campaigns, essentially multimodal in their form. Electoral campaigns aim at construing a candidate’s ethos – how a particular person gathers all the necessary attributes to lead a country considering the current state of affairs. In a nutshell, it is a job application, and the more effectively persuasive candidate gets the position. I report on the analysis of four propaganda videos produced by the Labour Party (PT) and the Social Liberal Party (PSL) campaigns for the run-off of the 2018 Brazilian Presidential election. The videos were broadcast during the fifteen days prior to the election day on public concession TV networks, as regulated by Brazilian electoral law. The data was annotated using ELAN, which allows the creation of different categories of annotation and analysis. This presentation will focus specifically on the linguistic analysis of each candidate’s final video just before the election. The transcripts were anayzed using the system of transitivty (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2015) as this metafunction allows us to assess the construction of knowledge and experience through language. Analysis results demonstrate an imbalance in how each candidate make use of processes related to Material, Mental and Relational processes that inform strategies of persuasion.
