📖Loosening the gag of self-denial: connections between intellectual property and translators’ voices in Brazilian translations of The Lord of the Rings

This presentation aims to make public my studies pertaining to intellectual property law as a constraint that shapes how translations are produced and received in the literary world, by looking at the discursive presence of Brazilian translators of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings (LOTR). Currently, the three existing translations of LOTR in Brazilian Portuguese hold distinct legal statuses under copyright law; they are the focal point of discussion concerning the translator’s presence in the text, explored in this presentation within the concepts of voice and style in Translation Studies and contextualized within the history of intellectual property protection regarding derivative works.
