Speaking is spelling: cross-talk between phonology and orthography in spoken language production

Over the last 40 or so years, a substantial amount of evidence has been generated which supports the claim that when individuals perceive spoken language, they involuntarily activate orthographic codes. By contrast, there is a lot less relevant evidence on whether the same is true for speakers: when literate individuals prepare spoken utterances, are orthographic properties of words (perhaps unconsciously) activated? I will highlight some of the controversies surrounding the claim that spelling is relevant for speaking, and I will describe some experimental evidence that my collaborators and I have recently generated which promises to answer this question.

My research is concerned with the cognitive processes of language, and specifically with those engaged when humans speak (as opposed to when they comprehend language). I investigate the way in which humans cognitively develop intentions of what they are trying to say, the way in which words are organised in and retrieved from a mental lexicon for the purpose of the utterance, and the processes involved in generating the appropriate articulation. Much of my work is based on behavioural studies; however, I have also been involved in neuroimaging research, and in studies of acquired brain damage. Other interests of mine include numerical cognition, and processing in the absence of conscious awareness. I received a Bachelor’s Degree from the College of New Jersey (1993) and a Master’s degree (1996) and a Ph.D. degree (1998) in cognitive psychology from Rice University, Houston. Between 1998 and 2000 I was a staff member in the language production group at the Max-Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, where I worked with Pim Levelt. I joined the School of Experimental Psychology in Bristol as a Lecturer in 2000, and have been a Professor since 2010.

Queer performativity

Over the last two decades, performativity has become one of the most significant notions – if not the most influential one – in the study of language and socio-cultural processes. Most commonly associated with the work of the American philosopher Judith Butler on gender, sexuality and the sexed body (1990, 1993, 2004, 2011), performativity’s uptake has far exceeded the original focus of the concept. Though appreciating the wide-raging impact of the concept, in this talk, I propose that it is perhaps time to “bring performativity back” (Livia and Hall 1997) to its origins; this time though it’s not its linguistic heritage that we should rediscover but its queer pedigree (Sedgwick 1993), which lies at the crossroads of gender, sexuality and the body. Such a suggestion might sound paradoxical, because the very existence of an origin(al) is undermined by a performativity approach. However, renewed attention to the body brings with it the promise of broadening the remit of inquiry beyond a narrow focus on language so as to encompass “aspects of experience and reality that do no present themselves in propositional or even in verbal form” (Sedgwick 2003: 6), such as affect and materiality (see also Bucholtz and Hall, in press, Peck and Stroud 2015). A re-centering of performativity around its queer roots also has the potential to re-frame ongoing discussions about (anti)normativity in gender and sexuality research.

Bio-Data

Dr. Tommaso M. Milani is Associate Professor of Linguistics at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. He is Co-Editor of the journals African Studies (Taylor and Francis) and Gender and Language (Equinox) with Carmen Rosa Caldas-Coulthard; he is also Editor of the book series Advances in Sociolinguistics (Bloomsbury). His work has appeared in many international journals, including Discourse & Society, Journal of Sociolinguistics, and Language in Society. He has recently edited the book Language and Masculinities: Performances, Intersections, Dislocations (Routledge, 2015).

Dr Mike Scott, the developer of the Corpus software Wordsmith Tools, will give a lecture entitled Developing Software for Corpus Linguistics on Wednesday March 16^th at 5pm in Sala Machado de Assis. 

At the beginning of the 1980’s, when Bloco B did not exist, Mike was a British Council Visiting Lecturer attached to PGI and working with a national team on ESP materials. Some of the early developmental work on what became Wordsmith Tools was done in Mike’s spare time in his house in Lagoa.
