📓Teaching pronunciation in public schools: theory and current research

This Open Seminar reflects the current state of my doctoral research and is concerned with the issue of English pronunciation in the particular context of public schools. I will discuss how teachers can improve their practices with the aid of literature in the field such as Celce-Murcia, Brinton and Goodwin’s (1996) framework of pronunciation instruction and Zimmer, Silveira and Alves’s (2009) book with activities to speakers of Brazilian Portuguese. In addition, I will share some ideas on classroom instruction informed by recent research that can help teachers have better results in their activities. Finally, the seminar will offer a glimpse of recent empirical research on the teaching pronunciation in Brazilian public schools.

📓Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) and The Bilingual Phonological Development

This Open Seminar focuses on reviewing basic theoretical frameworks that guide my research regarding Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) and its influence on the phonological development of bilingual children. To my knowledge, previous research on CAPD effects on children has only focused on monolingual children. For this seminar, I will provide a brief explanation of CAPD and how it affects language perception and production (ASHA, 2023; Moore, 2018; Pereira, 2016; 2013), in addition to briefly delineating the bilingual children’s profile concerning their phonological development (Paradi, 2022; Protapova et al., 2019; Albrecht, 2017).
