📖 Instructed second language acquisition (ISLA): Theoretical tenets and research methods

This seminar will describe the field of Instructed Second Language Acquisition (ISLA), situate it within general issues of SLA research, and discuss some of its unique research goals and methodologies. Several instructed settings for L2 acquisition will be described, including classroom, study abroad, and virtual environments. The talk will invite the audience to reflect on how variables such as explicit and implicit learning, the quality and quantity of L2 input, and types of interaction affect the learning processes and outcomes in these contexts. The seminar will emphasize how knowledge generated by ISLA research can impact L2 pedagogy and teaching materials. Attendees will be asked to read an introduction to the topic in preparation for this talk.
